Department Rules
A. Information about Admissions
- Similar Studies and Credit Approval
- If a student who applied to the master’s program at graduate school have taken more than 12 credits in mass media communications/journalism from his/her previous department or undergraduate institution as recognized by our journalism department’s faculty meeting, the credits are approved as similar studies.
- If a student who applied to the doctoral program at graduate school have taken more than 18 credits in mass media communications/journalism from the master’s/doctoral program or attended a special/professional graduate school in press, media, journalism, newspaper/ broadcasting, advertising/PR, and film/video, the credits are approved as similar studies.
- Details about Admission Process
- The admission process is divided into regular and special processes, but more than 50% of the master’s/doctoral program shall be selected through the special admission process.
- For the special admission process, priority will be given to applicants who have a bachelor’s or master’s degree and work in/have work experiences in journalism-related education and practical field such as newspaper/broadcasting, advertising/PR, film/video, etc.
B. Information about Credit Completion
- All students in the master’s/doctoral program must complete the core requirements (do not need to retake them in the doctoral program if they were completed in the master’s program.)
- The rules of graduate school shall be observed for other matters.
C. Information about Foreign Language Test
- Foreign language test subject - Master’s/doctoral program: English
- A person who plans to take the foreign language and comprehensive test must obtain the dean approval on the application form and submit it to the graduate school by a set deadline.
D. Information about Foreign Language and Comprehensive Test
- Subject for Comprehensive Test
- Choose 2 from 3 master’s courses completed
- Choose 3 from doctoral courses completed
- The rules of graduate school shall be observed for other matters.
E. Information about Submission and Evaluation of Thesis/Dissertation
- Doctoral degree: A Ph.D. candidate must submit more than 1 research paper (over 66.7%) as a dissertation as the lead author after entering the doctoral degree program.
- Master’s degree (choose 1 from below)
- Option 1. Research report
- Follow the “Guidelines on How to Write a Graduate School Research Report”
- Option 2. Creative digital video production
- A 20-minute long creative video self-planned/produced by a student (any genre is accepted)
- How to submit: Submit as an MP4 file in a USB drive with a production proposal and form.
- What to add in the production proposal: Design intention, progress, budget, what you have learned from the production process.
- What to add in the form: Details organizing the content by scene, storyboard, script, etc.
- Oral review by 4 experts on production presentation: 1 academic advisor and department professor, 2 external digital video producers (current PD, current film director, the president and vice-president of a production company. The thesis passes if approved by 3 out of 4 judges.
- Option 3. Publication of research paper
- Publish a research paper on a registered and to-be registered SCI/Scopus-level journal as the lead author (lead author: 1st author/main contact author
- Submit a proof of academic journal publication before the review date of research paper (if publication on an academic journal is confirmed, the date cannot exceed the submission date of final research paper)
